Our Sangha:

Our Sangha is in the lineage of Nichiren Shu which focuses on the Lotus Sutra as our base of study, faith, and practice. We meet in Tampa Bay regularly to learn the Dharma of Shakyamuni Buddha and the teachings of Nichiren Shonin.

We meet regularly on odd Tuesday evenings every month. During this time we practice Shodaigyo, which combines the chanting of Namu Myoho Renge Kyo and silent meditation. All are welcome to attend any service; no prior knowledge or training is needed. All chanting and meditation guidance is offered during the practice.

Our meetings are held every other Tuesday Evening:
Days: 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesday
September 2nd, 16th, 30th
October 7th, 21st
November 4th, 18th

Time: 7:00pm-8:30pm

Nichiren Shu Buddhism:

Below is an overview of our tradition from the book Awakening to the Lotus (pg.18-19). If you would like more information, please visit the provided web links or email us to learn more about the doctrine and practices of Nichiren Shu.

“As a meaningful Buddhist group, Nichiren Shu and it is practitioners must strive for the peace, happiness, and enlightenment of every living thing. Human life and the environment must be cherished and protected, and society must be encouraged toward peace and happiness. Therefore, the Nichiren Shu firmly holds the convictions of opposition to all war, prohibition of nuclear arms, and justice and peace in society. Besides promoting these values in society, we believe that by living as the Buddha taught us in the Lotus Sutra and by following the teachings of Nichiren Shonin, we can manifest these values naturally. We also spread this peace and happiness through the world by teaching others to follow the Buddha’s teachings.

The basic points of expressing our faith in our daily lives are explained in the Nichiren Shu creed:

1.We base our life on the example of the Lotus Sutra as personally experienced by Nichiren Shonin.

2.We put our faith in the Eternal Buddha Sakyamuni, who is the true teacher of wisdom and compassion for all people.

3. We train ourselves to attain Buddhahood by upholding Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, both in action and in spirit.

4.Our teacher is Nichiren Shonin, who vowed to cultivate the Buddhanature of all people and create the land of the Buddha in this world. We also vow to work for that goal.

5. We are all the Buddha’s children and we will live together peacefully with all people in our search for the truth.”

 Nichiren Shonin

"If you contemplate this Sutra day and night and recite it morning and evening, you will become an extraordinary practitioner of the Lotus Sutra. The character "sha" in the phrase "ze-kyoden-sha" (one who upholds this sutra) means any person; therefore, the phrase can mean anyone who has faith in the Lotus Sutra among monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen."

Nichiren Shonin
